Something like that. We were split into heroes, civilians and villains. In order to get the best ending we needed three from each faction still alive, but they also chose two of us each week to enact a kill on their behalf. It became a game of trying to make sure we kept the right numbers alive.
It would be too simple. [would it.] If we were in a state that we could kill him just by confronting him we wouldn't be here. More than likely he has defenses in place that we'll have to tear down first.
And...there's the people. We still don't know who'll show up, or if they'll be people we know. Getting them to trust us should also be our priority if this is going to work.
[there's a huff of agreement. this grave seems to be done, so nico moves on to the next.]
We need to, and we need to do it in a way that doesn't draw suspicion from the Nightman himself. That's the bigger issue. How do you trust someone without knowing their motivations?
[onward! at this rate, they're going to have the cemetery fixed up in a single day.]
...you don't, generally. [...] I've learned that the hard way. So they'd be right not to trust us, especially after everything they'll have gone through before they end up here.
I just wish we could come right out and tell them, but if the Nightman figures out we're here it'll be bad for everyone...
If he figures out we're here, none of us are leaving. [thinking, thinking....] I guess the best thing we can do is let them come to us on their own. There's always at least one person in these things that will ask questions and believe there's good in their "captors."
[sei genuinely cannot remember if anyone believed that there was any good in hal. granted, her memory of how all that went down is pretty skewed by her own grudge against the sheriff, soooo.]
[he considers this for a moment before he shakes his head.]
Perhaps it's better to say that there's always at least one person that will believe there's good in their captors, and if it's not that there's at least someone stubborn enough to think they can fight enough to change their minds.
So. We observe how they treat us, and each other, for the first week or two and see who comes to us. If we need to, we can find at least one or two people to try and vouch for us amongst strangers.
[sometimes you have a little bit of experience with this as someone who infiltrated an enemy camp pretending to be someone else.]
I'm pretty decent at that. You never know how a battle is going to go, even when you go in with a plan, so you have to be ready to think on your feet at all times.
That's sort of what I was hoping for. Even if we have a plan and should have a plan...we can't be too careful or too comfortable. We'll have to be ready for anything.
[he says, as a skeletal arm pops out of the ground and nico gently pats it back into the dirt. there, there.]
Most of our battles have plans, but I've lost track of the number of times we've had to change directions in the middle.
[sei shoots a slightly disturbed look at the skeletal arm, but nico has it underground soon enough.
there there... begone...]
...right. We've had plans going into things too and have had to do things differently than we expected to, especially when the enemy came up with something we didn't anticipate. I think most of us are used to this, so... we should be fine here, no matter what that Nightman bastard throws at us.

Is that it?

That would have been too easy. We had to find out by asking around and hoping it didn't turn out to be a bad decision.

[she huffs]
I'm glad it worked out for you.

[he's digging a few holes to rehome some flowers.]
I've been thinking of ways we can level the playing field here at least. But we still run into the same problem of the Nightman.
no subject
[sei you are a normie you don't stand a chance of that. but it's fine.]
...but our priority is to get as many people out of this as we can, so...
[she'll try to quell her stabbing urges... until they figure out a way to do that...]

Shady bastard...
[but, hmm. she frowns, because she came from a game where the npc was like, the opposite of sympathetic.]
...getting them to trust us might be easier said than done. I agree that we'll need to, though.

she hates waiting.]
no subject
That's not going to be a problem, is it?
[he's not always a fan of waiting either, but he is aware that sometimes you have to bide your time to get what you want.]
no subject
[yes.
yes it is.]
no subject
it's fine. nico knows how to bide his time, but he also understands that it can't always be that way.]
...how good are you at improvising, actually?
no subject
[she smiles.]

You don't think the Nightman secretly has a plan for this particular scenario, do you?
[bastards like that guy tend to be either very egotistical or very paranoid, and he's not sure which side the nightman falls on right now.]
no subject
[...]
So if that happens, let's just stab him.
